HOW THE TTOUCH HARNESS SYSTEM WORKS by Alex Wilson

Does your dog pull on the lead?

Does your dog pull on the lead?

Is there anything more frustrating than a dog that pulls on the lead? Whether you're a dog owner struggling with daily walks or a trainer working with reactive dogs, pulling is one of the most common behavioural challenges. But here's the truth: dogs don't want to pull. The good news? The Tellington Leading Exercises can stop it.

I discovered this over sixteen years ago, and it changed not just how I work with dogs, but my life. What started as a solution for two pulling puppies became my passion as a Tellington TTouch practitioner.

When I brought home two new puppies, I quickly discovered I had a problem. One of them, Arapahoe, was a Siberian Husky who was bred to pull a sled. Both puppies pulled like trains on the lead, making walks exhausting rather than enjoyable.

Everything changed when I met Tellington TTouch Instructor, Marie Miller. She introduced me to the Tellington Leading Exercises, and within weeks, I saw a dramatic difference in my dogs' behaviour. They were calmer, more responsive, and actually enjoyable to walk. Inspired by what I'd witnessed, I went on to train as a Tellington TTouch practitioner myself.

Years later, I had the chance to put this knowledge into practice when Liz Dixon, former sales director of Dogs Today, asked me to help her dog Ferris stop pulling. Using a TTouch-designed harness and a double-ended lead, we achieved remarkable results. That success was documented in Dogs Today magazine.

Why Does My Dog Pull On The Lead?

I've heard it countless times: "My dog just loves to pull" or "They want to be the leader of the pack." The reality is different. Dogs don't inherently want to pull on the lead. In fact, most dogs pull because they have something to pull against: tension in the lead or resistance from the handler.

Emotions like arousal, excitement, anxiety, or fear fuel pulling behaviour. Even well-trained dogs can slip into pulling patterns if the lead creates opposition and tension. But here's where Tellington TTouch makes the difference: it addresses the root cause, not just the symptom.

The TTouch Method: Movement and Balance

What sets the Tellington Method apart is something you won't find in other training systems: movement exercises combined with bodywork. Why does this matter? Because a dog who moves without balance will struggle emotionally. A pulling dog often drops their weight forward, destabilising their entire frame. By helping your dog move in better balance, you naturally shift their mental and emotional state too.

The Tellington Leading Exercises teach dogs to walk with awareness and self-confidence. They learn to move deliberately rather than reactively, especially when combined with the right equipment, the transformation is remarkable.

THE RIGHT EQUIPMENT MAKES ALL OF THE DIFFERENCE

The TTouch Harness

We recommend a two-point harness for walking dogs the TTouch way. The TTouch Harness is specifically designed to promote balance. Unlike many harnesses that pull dogs off-centre, the TTouch harness distributes pressure evenly, allowing your dog to walk in their own natural balance.

It's also incredibly practical: fully adjustable, easy to fit and remove without pulling over the dog's head or lifting their feet. For stressed dogs, this means no pulling over the ears, forcing them to lift feet and paws and so on.

The TTouch Harmony Leash

The Harmony Leash is a game-changer. This double-ended lead features a sliding fleece handle with a swivel (to prevent twisting) and is fully adjustable to suit dogs of different sizes.

Here's why it works: the sliding handle eliminates a fixed point of contact, which reduces the opposition reflex that makes dogs pull harder. When there's no rigid anchor point, your dog has nothing to brace against. Instead of pulling, they learn to move with you naturally.

With a two-point contact system (front and back of the harness), you can give clear, consistent signals: when to go, when to stop, when to change direction. And here's a key insight: instead of bracing against a pull, you move your hand forward. It feels counter-intuitive at first, but it removes the resistance your dog is bracing against.

The Harmony Leash works brilliantly for walking multiple dogs, carrying shopping, pushing a pram, or even for handlers in wheelchairs. It's genuinely one of the most versatile pieces of equipment we have.

The TTouch Connector

The Connector is an elegant solution inspired by Finnish TTouch practitioner Pia Arhio-Letho. It's a simple piece of adjustable webbing with clips at each end and a sliding central ring. What makes it special? It distributes pressure between the front and back rings of the harness, maintaining two-point contact even when using a single lead or long line.

Many trainers use long lines for off-lead training and recall work. But a traditional long line applies pressure only at one point, which can knock a dog off balance when they reach full length. The Connector changes this by dividing pressure between two points, so your dog stays balanced regardless of where they are on the line.

The adjustment is critical: the Connector should sit naturally without catching the dog's legs. For most dogs, they should be able to lower their head and pass through it to change sides. For smaller breeds, you might need to sacrifice this flexibility to prevent tripping, but the balance benefit remains.

I've worked with owners who struggled even with the Harmony Leash, but adding a Connector completely transformed their dog's lead work. My own young Dalmatian, Magick, showed exactly this pattern: brilliant as a puppy, then adolescence brought pulling challenges. The Connector made all the difference, and now we enjoy truly loose-lead walks together.
